The Maine Channel is a UMO student organization with the goal of helping students get hands on experience in television field and studio production. The Maine Channel is run by students who volunteer their time to create sports, news and entertainment programming that is shown on the campus closed circuit cable station (channel 42), as well as online.
The Maine Channel will have an information meeting this Thursday at 6 p.m. to allow interested students to find out how they can get involved with UMO broadcast media.
Remember, no experience is necessary! This will help you get the training and experience you need to be competitive in the job market. Many of the experience you will get at the MC is not offered in Journalism or New Media classes!
Everyone is welcome, regardless of your major or classification. The MC is especially in need of students who are underclassmen... as well as students who are interested in working on the news.
There are various volunteer opportunities with time commitments starting at about 3 hours per week...or you could produce your own show! Here are some ideas on how you could get involved:
1. Work on the Maine Campus Newscast. This is a weekly news program that will give you real-world resume worthy experience on a working newscast. Various positions are open including: videographers (go out and shoot video), reporters, producers, editors, studio camera operators, graphics, studio audio technicians, directors, teleprompter operators, writers, etc. The news has been taped on Fridays in the past, but we are considering moving it to Thursday at 5p.m. to allow more volunteers to get involved (since Thursday is NOT the weekend. :) If you are in CMJ 351, volunteering on the newscast is an extra credit opportunity. Dr. Hughes will also be volunteering on Fridays to help with training sessions and production.
2. Work on the Black Bear sports show. This is a weekly sports show that features UMO athletic events. In the past, this show has taped on Tuesdays, but the day for this semester is still TBA. Various positions are open including: videographers (go out and shoot video), reporters, producers, editors, studio camera operators, graphics, studio audio technicians, directors, teleprompter operators, writers, etc.
3. Work in the creative services department. This department will focus on campus and help various departments create and edit media to showcase their students, faculty, programs and special events. Various positions are open including: videographers (go out and shoot video), reporters, producers, editors, studio camera operators, graphics, studio audio technicians, directors, teleprompter operators, writers, etc. Some ideas of the types of content in this department: Environmental/sustainability journalism, work with kids on producing content, work with the Theater Department, cover student government, entertainment news, student profiles, talk shows, etc.
4. Promotions and Development: This is the "advertising department." Although the MC does not take paid ads, this department will work to promote the MC through outreach, PR and video promos. If you're looking to get more experience for a future in PR or advertising, this is the place.
If you are interested, would like to come to the Thursday informational session, or have more questions, please contact Dr. Hughes on First Class: sunny.hughes@umit.maine.edu
